The Best RC Nitro Cars!

RC NITRO CARSIf you’re looking for exciting RC action, then nitro cars are definitely the way to go. However, with so many RC nitro cars to choose from and your hard-earned money on the line, deciding on the best nitro car for you is easier said than done!

With the number of options available today, you have to know exactly what you’re looking for in order to select the right car for your intended use, abilities, and budget. The more help you can get the better!

It’s tempting just to pick the coolest looking car or one that comes in a box stating it can go 100 miles per hour, jump 100 feet, and land softly on all four wheels, but looks and packaging are often deceiving. Thankfully, you have me in your corner to steer you in the right direction.

So, without further ado, here are some suggestions to consider when shopping for the perfect RC nitro car for you.

This post, it’s photos and table include links to products on other websites. If you purchase something through these links we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

1. Value for money.

With the Tornado S30 Nitro Buggy, Redcat Racing basically upgraded its wildly popular Tornado BB by throwing in a powerful SH engine, adding an aluminum exhaust, and replacing the standard header with a performance variety.

The 1/10 scale Redcat Racing Tornado S30 Nitro Buggy also comes with aluminum oil-filled shocks and an aluminum-alloy chassis, allowing it to perform just as well on the track as it does in your backyard.

Considering all it has to offer this little beast of a nitro car is definitely fantastic value for money.

2. If you want something cheap but still gives an authentic experience.

Whether you want to lay waste to your competition on the track or just show off for your friends, the Shockwave Nitro Buggy, also by Redcat Racing, is a cheaper way to enjoy an authentic nitro RC experience.

Thanks to its robust nitro-powered 2.67cc Vertex engine, the Shockwave can launch to speeds of 35 mph or more in no time at all. With composite disc brakes and aluminum parts, the speedy buggy is as authentic as it gets for such a relatively cheap price.

Best of all, you can flip it, and roll it, and the Shockwave will keep plugging away just like you’d expect from a much more expensive car.

3. If you want an entry point car you can improve over time.

If you’re looking for a high-performance nitro buggy with a load of parts options you can add to make improvements over time, then the HPI Racing Trophy 3.5 Buggy RTR is an obvious choice.

HPI has a long history as one of the premier RC brands, producing high performance machines guaranteed to put satisfied smiles on their owner’s faces.

The Trophy 3.5 continues this tradition by coming stock with durable and lightweight aluminum parts, a lethally powerful Nitro Star F3.5 motor with ample tuning opportunities, HB Proto racing tires, and much more.

Although it’s more than capable of tearing up the track in its stock form, there are a ton of extra parts you can add to the entry-level racing buggy.

From big bore shock sets and adjustable stability control to aluminum clutch shoe sets and steering upgrade sets, HPI offers plenty of upgrade options if you want to make improvements over time.

However, you can take your time if you wish, because the Trophy 3.5 is loud, stable, and has plenty of power in its stock form, allowing you to really indulge and push this buggy to the limit.

4. If you want something that is relatively forgiving for a newbie.

Even seasoned RC car drivers can be hard on their RC nitro cars from time to time, so it’s no surprise that most newbies to the RC realm also tend to push their buggies to the limit either on purpose or just through in experience. Compared to RC trucks that tend to be more robust by the nature of their overall design, you do have have think more carefully about durability when it comes to RC nitro cars.

After all, it takes time to learn how to properly use the transmitter, learn your car’s abilities, acquire the skills to avoid crashing over jumps, and so on.

Therefore, if you’re a newbie, you need a car that will be as forgiving as possible, and the Exceed Hyper Speed Beginner Version is just that.

With high-impact wheels, an adjustable wishbone suspension, traction-grabbing radial tires, and other forgiving features, the Exceed Hyper Speed Beginner Version is great for first-time drivers of RC nitro cars.  Very fast and very stable!

5. If you want something that is just awesome fun.

Newbie-friendly is one thing, but if you want a blazing fast RC nitro car that takes no prisoners when it comes to outright speed and performance, then the Traxxas Nitro 4-Tec 3.3 RTR is just what the doctor ordered.

To say that this speed demon is one of the fastest out of the box RC cars around would not be an understatement. In fact, the Traxxas Nitro 4-Tec 3.3 can reach speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour!

The super-fast buggy incorporates an extremely powerful TRX 3.3 performance racing motor with a lightweight chassis to create amazing race-ready machine that will wow spectators and smoke the competition.

Just be warned you will definitely need a fair bit of flat asphalt or other tarmac concrete to really get the most out of this car!

When combined with an advanced Traxxas TQi 2.4GHz Radio System, this RC nitro car is a no-brainer for anyone searching for asphalt-churning speed and some awesome fun.

Picking the Best RC Nitro Cars For You!

Well, there you have it folks. There may be a ton of RC nitro cars to choose from, but regardless of what you’re looking for, one of these cars is sure to be a perfect fit.

      Hi Scott,

Nothing like a good argument over RC cars between brothers!

From what I’ve seen the Tornado would have the edge. It’s also got a 3.0cc engine which benefits further from its 2 speed transmission and while the Shockwave has still got a very respectable 2.67cc engine (and many and not too dissimilar other specs to the Tornado) it just has a single speed transmission which at the end of the day won’t do the engine the same justice as a 2 speed will.

However all of this only applies if there is no customisation done to either as with a few upgrades and the right tweaks/tuning the performance and speed of both these already great cars can be cranked up even further.

There are a few more specs on both the Tornado (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005NABCKY/?tag=myrc-text1-20) and Shockwave (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005NAD996/?tag=myrc-text2-20) over at Amazon too you might want to check out.

There is not much in price between the two either so if I had a few extra dollars I’d probably fork out for the Tornado.

      Hope that helps!

I’ve owned both. The Tornado will blow the doors off of the Shockwave. The Shockwave can’t compare when it comes to speed or performance.

        Hi James,

I’d agree. If you can spend a little bit more I’d opt for the Tornado too! Thanks for your comment!

      Hi Nitro Hog,

Thanks for stopping by! In all honesty they are both REALLY similar and to some degree it will come to how well you maintain them. If I was forced to choose, myself I’d probably say the Tornado. Hope that helps!
